Welcome
Healthy students learn better and are more successful in school.  The goal of the OCDE is for all students to succeed.  We recognize the importance of health and its relationship to learning.  Health is more than the absence of disease.  We want our students to experience wellness and achieve their greatest potential.  Coordinated school health programs, which include nursing and health services, promote health and wellness.  Our mission is to serve students, schools, parents, and the community to promote optimal health for our schools and community.  The OCDE provides the support our schools need to maintain a healthy environment that fosters learning.

WEST NILE VIRUS ALERT

West Nile Virus (WNV) activity is very high in Orange County this year and Orange County has already had more cases so far this season than in any year since 2004. We urge all Orange County residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. With school starting and athletic practices resuming in the late afternoon and early evenings, students, their families, and staff may be outdoors during prime mosquito biting times. Although the risk of severe infection is increased in persons over age 50 years or with certain medical conditions, several counties, including Orange County, have already reported WNV cases including serious illness in children this season. Please see the attached flyer in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese for more information about WNV prevention.

For more information about WNV, see http://www.ochealthinfo.com/epi/wnv/index.htm.
